This rocking chair arrived with layers of caked-on dirt. My first step was to clean the chair using both water-based and solvent-based methods. Next I replaced the cane seat and applied multiple coats of shellac. I rubbed out the shellac using black wax and steel wool. The black tinted wax accentuates the pore structure. I left a small amount of the wax in the crevices of the joints and turnings to simulate an aged look.
